At the start of the 1990s it was almost impossible to avoid the Game Boy. It was on television, in newspapers and across the pages of magazines, part of one of the widest advertising campaigns Nintendo ever ran. This new arrival is a single surviving fragment of that blitz: an original UK magazine advertisement for the console.

Original UK magazine advertisement for the Nintendo Game Boy
Designed to be read once and binned. This one had other plans.

What It Is

It is one page from Nintendo's wide British campaign for the Game Boy, the sort of advert a reader in the early 1990s would have flipped past in a magazine without a second thought, and which is precisely why so few survive in good shape. Ephemeral by design, printed to be read once and thrown away, adverts like this were never meant to last, and that ordinariness is exactly what makes a clean surviving example worth keeping now.

Why It Joined the Collection

The collection keeps a growing series of period Game Boy advertisements from several countries, and each new one adds another angle on how the console was sold around the world. This UK page sits alongside the American, Japanese, Italian and other adverts already held, and together they build a picture no single country's marketing could give on its own. Advertising is how a product speaks to the public, and preserving these pages keeps the Game Boy's own voice, market by market, part of the record.

This UK advertisement is documented, with a full scan, on its own page in the collection.
