Before the internet made a walkthrough for everything only a search away, players relied on printed guides, and Japan produced some of the best. This new arrival is one of them: an official Japanese game guide for the Game Boy, published under the Handy Game Machine title and sold only in Japan.

What It Is
Across its eighty-two pages the book introduces Game Boy games and hardware and, for a selection of titles, offers complete walkthroughs with detailed hints. It is the kind of publication that sat next to the console on a desk, dog-eared and returned to whenever a player got stuck. Being Japan-only, it never reached Western readers at the time, which gives it an extra pull for anyone documenting how the Game Boy was supported in print in its home market.
Why It Joined the Collection
Guide books are part of a console's support ecosystem, the printed scaffolding that helped people actually finish the games, and they are easily lost because they were treated as disposable tools rather than keepsakes. This one joins the collection's other official Japanese guide books, building a small library that records how the Game Boy was explained and championed to players in Japan. A collection about the machine is richer for including the things that were made to help people use it, not only the games and hardware themselves.
The Handy Game Machine gamebook is documented, with photographs, on its own page in the collection.
