The Soft Case, Maybe the Rarest Game Boy Accessory of All
Updated: 4 days ago
Every collecting field has its white whale, the one item people chase for years and rarely catch. For the original Game Boy, a surprising candidate holds that title: not a rare console or a valuable game, but a simple carrying bag. This arrival is that bag, the Game Boy Soft Case, and for many collectors it is the single hardest Game Boy accessory in the world to find.

What It Is
The Game Boy Soft Case is a storage bag for the console and a few cartridges, made from Belleseime, a Japanese polyester-and-nylon microfibre prized for resisting dirt and cleaning easily. It launched alongside the original Game Boy in 1989, but only in Japan and only in a very limited run. Crucially, it is one of the very few Game Boy accessories to be given its own DMG number, DMG-06, which places it in Nintendo's internal numbering system right alongside the console itself.
Why a Simple Bag Became a Grail
The DMG number is the first clue to its importance. The console itself is the DMG-01, the link cable the DMG-04, and only a small handful of first-party accessories earned a low DMG code of their own. To find a soft bag sitting at DMG-06, among the console's founding family of products, tells you it was there from the very start, part of Nintendo's original 1989 vision for the Game Boy. That pedigree, combined with a tiny Japan-only print run, is what elevates an ordinary-looking pouch into something collectors obsess over.

There is a cruel logic to its rarity, too. A bag is, by design, a thing you use hard: stuffed in a rucksack, dragged to school, left in the sun, eventually worn out and thrown away. Soft, fabric accessories survive far more poorly than plastic or metal ones, so even a modest original run dwindles to almost nothing over thirty years. The choice of Belleseime microfibre, a genuinely nice material, is a small period detail that shows Nintendo cared about the accessory even if few buyers did. The result is an object that was cheap and humble when new and is now, against all expectation, one of the great prizes of Game Boy collecting.
Why It Joined the Collection
A collection built around the DMG-01 and its ecosystem is not complete without the accessories Nintendo made for it at the very beginning, and the Soft Case is the hardest of those to secure. Its low DMG number marks it as a founding member of the Game Boy family, and its extreme scarcity makes finding one a genuine event. Preserving it means safeguarding a piece that most Game Boy collections will never contain, an unassuming bag that quietly outranks far flashier things.
