Some games hide their ambition. Donkey Kong for the Game Boy opens looking like a faithful little remake of the 1981 arcade original, the one that gave Mario his first job, and then, once you clear those familiar early stages, it reveals itself as something much larger. This new arrival is one of the true greats of the library, and it earns its place twice over.
What It Is
Released by Nintendo in 1994, the game takes the four original arcade screens as a prologue and then unfolds into a full puzzle-platformer of around one hundred stages, which is why fans affectionately call it Donkey Kong '94. Where the arcade game was about climbing to the top, this one is about thinking your way there, with keys, switches and clever traversal turning each stage into a small puzzle. It is generous, inventive and beautifully paced, and it is often held up as one of the finest games the Game Boy ever received.
A Technical Milestone
Beyond being a wonderful game, Donkey Kong holds a genuine first: it was the first Game Boy game designed for Super Game Boy support. Slotted into the Super Game Boy adapter on a home television, it could show colour and a custom border, features built in from the start rather than bolted on. That makes the cartridge a small landmark in the platform's technical story as well as its games catalogue, a title that pointed toward how the ageing handheld could be enriched by the hardware around it.
Why It Joined the Collection
A cartridge that is both a beloved game and a documented technical first is exactly the sort of piece a collection built around the original Game Boy wants at its heart. Donkey Kong tells two stories at once, the creative one of a classic reinvented far beyond its arcade roots, and the technical one of a title made to shine through the Super Game Boy, and it tells them from a single, unassuming grey cartridge.
