Here is something the Game Boy was never really supposed to have: a horror game. The genre was essentially absent from the original library, because dread and unease did not fit Nintendo's family-friendly game policy of the era. This arrival is a game that set out, decades later, to fill that gap on purpose. Deadeus is a modern homebrew horror title made for genuine Game Boy hardware, and it has joined the collection in its sealed physical edition.

What It Is

Released in 2022 by the small studio Incube8 Games, Deadeus was built using Chris Maltby's GB Studio engine, with music by Stuart Busby, and it plays entirely on the real console. The premise is quietly unsettling: a boy has a prophetic nightmare that everyone in his village will die in three days, and the player spends the game investigating how, or whether, that fate can be avoided. There is no single fixed path through it, and it carries eleven different endings, so what you uncover and how the story closes depend on the choices you make. It was released both as this physical cartridge and as a ROM download.

A Genre the Game Boy Never Had

Part of what makes Deadeus fascinating is that it does something the original catalogue never did, and does it convincingly within the machine's tight limits. Four shades of grey, a small screen and a chirpy sound chip are not the obvious tools of horror, yet handled with care they turn out to be perfect for it: restraint and suggestion do more than spectacle ever could. That a game like this exists at all is a testament to the modern homebrew scene, which continues to write genuinely new chapters for a console that stopped selling long ago.

Why It Joined the Collection

The collection is built around the original Game Boy, but the original Game Boy is not only a historical object; it is still a living platform, and Deadeus is proof. A sealed, physical, present-day horror game sits happily beside the 1989 releases as a bookend of sorts: the same hardware, a genre it was never given, made real by people who love the machine enough to keep building for it. It is exactly the kind of piece that shows the story is still being written.

Deadeus is documented, with photographs, on its own page in the collection.
