The Exam Project That Never Ended: nanoloop and the Game Boy as Instrument

In the spring of 1998, an art student in Hamburg walked into a club in Cologne and made music on a Nintendo Game Boy. The venue was hosting a "lo-fi contest", the machine was a grey handheld most people still thought of as a toy, and the software running on it was his exam project. Twenty-five years later, that same software is still being made, sold and played all over the world. It is called nanoloop, and it is one of the most quietly influential things ever to run on the Game Boy.

The Student and the Idea

nanoloop is the work of Oliver Wittchow, who studied at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. The seed was planted in 1997, when Wittchow and a fellow student, Sebastian Burdach, began tinkering with music software for the Game Boy. Burdach wrote a bare-bones sequencer in Game Boy BASIC over the course of three nights. The following year Wittchow switched to programming the console in C, and nanoloop took shape as his pre-diploma project at the art school.

That origin matters, because nanoloop has never really felt like a piece of engineering. It feels like a piece of design. It was made by an artist, for a reason an artist would understand: not to squeeze the most notes out of the hardware, but to make the act of composing feel direct, physical and beautiful.

Music in Two Dimensions

The tagline Wittchow still uses is "music in two dimensions", and it is the perfect description. Where most music software asks you to type notes, or stack them on a timeline, nanoloop hands you a grid. You sculpt sound by moving marks around a square: the position of a dot or a dash sets a sound's pitch, its volume, its decay. Under the hood it is driving the Game Boy's built-in four-channel sound chip, two square waves, a custom four-bit wave and a noise channel, but you never really think in those terms. You think in shapes.

The result is an instrument that a complete beginner can make something lovely on within minutes, and that an expert can spend years mastering. That balance, easy to start and hard to exhaust, is the mark of a genuinely good design, and it is a large part of why nanoloop has outlived almost every music tool of its era.

One Idea, Many Machines

What began as a single Game Boy cartridge has grown into a small family, all maintained by the same person across a quarter of a century. The current version for the original hardware is nanoloop one, a sequencer and synthesizer cartridge that runs on the Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and even the modern Analogue Pocket. It is full of small, thoughtful touches: a 3.5mm jack that syncs and transfers files with an ordinary audio cable, no link cable or adaptors required, and a circuit board deliberately covered in an eight-millimetre grid of plastic tiles, so you can reskin it with LEGO and other compatible bricks.

Alongside it sits nanoloop two, built for the Game Boy Advance and its very different FM synthesis, and newer experiments like nanoloop q and a fresh tool called the naive tracker, plus mobile versions that carried the idea onto phones. It is a rare thing in software: a single, coherent vision, refined patiently by one author since 1998, rather than handed off, rebooted or abandoned.

Why It Belongs in a Game Boy Museum

This museum is built around the idea that the Game Boy was far more than a games machine, and nanoloop is one of the clearest proofs of that. In the right hands the little grey box is not a console at all. It is a synthesizer, a sketchpad, a stage instrument, and it has been exactly that for musicians all over the world for decades, from bedroom producers to festival stages. There is also something fitting about nanoloop in particular. A museum tries to keep an old machine meaningful long after the industry has moved on. nanoloop has been doing the same thing from the inside, one grid at a time, since it was an art student's exam.
