50 Years of Games, Preserved in Munich: Videospielkultur e.V.

Some collections are measured in highlights. This one is measured in thousands. In Munich, Videospielkultur e.V. looks after more than 11,000 games and half a century of history, and has done so, quietly, since 2006.
We wanted to feature it, because a broad, mission-driven archive like theirs is exactly the kind of company a single-device archive like ours keeps.
A Video Game Archive in Munich
Videospielkultur e.V. is a non-profit association founded in 2006, and its holdings are formidable: over 11,000 video games, close to 50 consoles and home computers, and several hundred German-language computer and video game magazines. Together they document more than 50 years of the medium, and interested visitors can be given access to the archive and even consult the association's expert members.
Games as a Cultural Asset
Behind the collection stands a clear conviction: that video games deserve recognition as a valuable cultural asset, on a political, academic and social level. It is a mission that turns a private passion into public advocacy, and that any preservationist will recognise instantly.

The Games Lounge
The association also keeps the doors open. At its monthly 'Games Lounge' in the Munich club rooms, members and the curious meet to play together, get to know one another and talk, and it is the oldest continuously held event series of its kind in Germany.
Breadth Meets Depth
That is where our paths cross. Videospielkultur e.V. preserves the whole breadth of the medium; the Game Boy Museum goes exhaustively deep on a single device within it.
