European Super Game Boy SNES adapter for the Game Boy DMG-01

This is the European (German-market) release of the Super Game Boy, the SNES adapter that plays Game Boy games on a TV and adds colour to their greyscale graphics.

 

This version came with a booklet holding the instructions and a guide to well-known Game Boy games. The Japanese and US versions, and the Super Game Boy 2, are also catalogued in the collection.

The Super Game Boy 2 is a revised version of the Super Game Boy, sold only in Japan, with a slimmer transparent blue housing.

 

It added a Game Link connector and an LED, so a Game Boy or compatible hardware such as the Game Boy Printer could be linked while playing through the SNES, and its updated firmware brought five new screen-border designs. The original Super Game Boy, in its Japanese, US and European versions, is also in the collection.

The Game Boy Player plays Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games on the Nintendo GameCube, and it was the last official hardware solution for playing original Game Boy cartridges on a successor console.

 

The unit (DOL-017) plugs into the high-speed port under the GameCube and needs a boot disc (DOL-006). It does not emulate the Game Boy; instead it contains hardware almost identical to the Game Boy Advance. It joins the Super Game Boy and Transfer Pak in the collection's group of cross-console adapters.

The Transfer Pak (NUS-019) is an adapter for the Nintendo 64 that reads Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. A Game Boy cartridge slots into the Transfer Pak, which in turn plugs into the bottom of an N64 controller.

 

It was used by games that linked the handheld and console worlds, and it is one of several adapters in the collection that connect the Game Boy to other Nintendo systems.

The Transfer Pak (NUS-019) is an adapter for the Nintendo 64 that reads Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. A Game Boy cartridge slots into the Transfer Pak, which in turn plugs into the bottom of an N64 controller.

 

It was used by games that linked the handheld and console worlds, and it is one of several adapters in the collection that connect the Game Boy to other Nintendo systems.

Nintendo Power Memory flash cartridge (Japan 1999) for the Game Boy DMG-01

Nintendo Power was a Japan-only download service for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Super Famicom that let players load games onto special flash cartridges. This Game Boy flash cartridge holds up to seven games.

 

This version comes pre-loaded with Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land. It launched in 1999, fairly late in the Game Boy's life, which makes it an interesting record of how Nintendo kept the platform going.

Multi-item promotional sets like this are uncommon today because the value lies in keeping every part together with the box. The 4-Player Adapter also appears elsewhere in the collection in its own bundles.

This is a plain AC adapter for the Game Boy, sold only in Japan from 1989.

 

In other countries Nintendo sold the Rechargeable Battery Pack (DMG-03) instead, since that already included an AC adapter. The DMG-03 is also catalogued in the collection.

It is one of a large family of lights and magnifiers made for the Game Boy, many of which are catalogued in the collection. Its design was widely copied; the Gamester Light Magnifier in the collection looks very similar.

Tetris is the best-selling game on the Game Boy. More than any other title, it defined the system and helped turn Nintendo's handheld into a worldwide phenomenon.

 

Its appeal lies in its simplicity: easy to learn, hard to put down, and timeless in design. The console was bundled with Tetris in several markets, and a number of those Tetris bundles are catalogued in the collection alongside this US cartridge.
